What Rackmount Do You Need?

Rackmount cases are made to fit into the standard 19-inch racks. They can be used to house any electronic modules like disc players and power units, and can be mounted vertically unto rails made of metal on each side of a shelf, usually in a companies server room.

Depending on the purpose, some rackmount cases can be large enough to fill a whole unit while others either fit into half a unit only or even two or more. Because rackmount cases originated from mounting systems found in railroad signaling relays, some still call them relay racks. The 19-inch rack format however has remained to be constant even with the changes that have happened with the technology mounted within it. While usable for any purpose, the 19-inch rack is most widely used in the telecommunications, audio, entertainment, computing, and other related industries using modern technology.

Kinds
Hard-mount rack case: A hard-mount rack case is placed on a rack unit with walls touching the case directly and are best for use with interconnected devices like several power modules needed by UPS systems.

Shock-mount rack case: A shock-mount rack case has a one-inch to two-inch layer of foam in between the rack walls and the case because they are designed to be used on sensitive equipment like optical drives and lead-acid battery modules.

Buying a rackmount case
When looking for rackmount cases to buy, take careful consideration of the material that a rackmount case is made from. Depending on what you’ll be using it for, choose a rackmount case material that is best suited for your purpose. For example, if you’re using power modules, aluminum is a good choice as it has better cooling capacities compared to steel ones. You would need a rackmount case with better cooling capacities because power modules generate a lot of heat.

Hergo Inc manufacture rackmounts of all sizes from their factory proudly based in the U.S, using only the best and sturdiest materials. With hundreds of satisfied customers throughout the U.S, they are the perfect solution to both your server rack and rackmount requirments.

Server Racks – the best practices

Server rack cabinets are important to your business success because they provide a safe and sturdy space for the equipment that is crucial to the survival of your organization. If you select the right server rack, you will keep your equipment cool, your power running, and your downtime minimized, whilst maximizing your profits!

Picking the Right Size Server Rack
You must choose a server rack with enough space to house all of your server apparatus, as well as any additional future purchases. The internal height of a server rack is measured from the highest location of any side rail to the bottom of the cabinet; the inside depth of a server rack is measured from the insides of front and rear doors; and inside width is measured one side panel to the other one.
Make sure that the rack you choose has external dimensions that will fit in the floor space planned for it. Also, make sure to check that it will be able to be safely positioned through all doorways. Also make sure that the placement will adequately meet any significant clearance or safety specifications that your company may need to adhere to.

Also make sure to always make use of appropriate rack-loading methods, such as always placing the heavier pieces of equipment at the bottom of the rack to prevent a rack from becoming unstable and too heavy at the top. Make sure to decide about what you want to put in the front and back of the rack (based on when and how often you will need to obtain access or take out equipment).

Security
If you are building a new data center, try to build away from roads, reduce the number of windows in the data center, and make sure there is physical security on all exits and entrances.
Also, there are security considerations when it comes to the environment of your data center. Make sure to monitor amperage draw per circuit, temperature, and water leaks.

Computer Server Racks

Most modern computers can be utilized as a working server by mounting server software such as Windows 2003 Server and connecting the machine to the Intranet. Using server racks is a good option to store these servers properly, safely, and neatly.

Computer server racks will help save space and allow for clean work surface; they are a perfect alternative to the traditional computer desk. Usually, most computer server racks are movable and compact. Server racks are used as an efficient resource for storing and displaying computers in many fields such as medical, industrial, or commercial environments. Hergo computer racks are manufactured in the U.S. and are covered with scratch-proof, powder-coat paint and are made from ten-, twelve-, or fourteen-gauge steel.

Modern computer server racks are fitted with an exhaust fan, which provides superb ventilation in order to keep the server optimal. Computer server racks have some removable parts such as a side panel, doors, etc. The top panel of the server rack helps to prevent foreign substances from entering. Side panels offer security and are available in three options such as louvered, solid removable and solid fixed. Multimedia equipment, audio devices, and anything that requires a vertical view can be put into a computer server rack.

Computer server racks are well suited for all types of computer servers like those from Dell, HP, and IBM. The prices depend upon the sizes of the racks and the height of most racks varies from 76” to 90”, depth varying from 30” to 40”, and width is normally 19”.

These racks are available in an array of colors like blue, black, pearl white, and light and dark gray. With the growth of computer technology, the demand for server racks is also increasing remarkably.

Server Room/Data Center Checklist

When relocating or planning a server room or data center there are a few things that are critical to your server room’s proper functioning.

Most important is the location. The location needs to be central as well as close to a wiring closet. The server room must also be scalable and allow for growth and new equipment. The best way of achieving this is to use a space saving vertical stacking system that can be expanded to your needs as your server room grows in size.

Hergo construct scalable open rack systems that provide a flexible, space management solution with maximum benefits allowing your server room to grow comfortably over time.

Server rooms also need to be located a safe distance from any source of moisture. Once you have all your equipment and computer furniture in place you should make sure you have done the following:

  1. Check for/have installed fire-rated door(s).
  2. Install fire, water, smoke, and power quality detectors.
  3. Determine and install optimal fire suppression system.
  4. Ensure server room air quality with filters, air conditioner or heater, and dumidifier/dehumidifier.
  5. Install anti-static flooring, raised flooring, and/or server pedestals.
  6. Mount patch panel(s) for voice and data.
  7. Install and test surge protectors and UPS.

Now that your equipment is in place and is adequately protected against both heat and moisture all that remains is for you to install servers, install all software and boot up.

Once that is done, test all connections and your server room is ready to go!

Cooling For Computer Enclosures

Hergo Jupiter Computer EnclosureWhen designing an office or home computer room, there are many aspects involved in the choosing of computer furniture that are important to consider. While its complete functionality simplifies purchasing computer furniture –with computer furniture, the key thing to consider is how a piece will function rather than how it will look– something that complicates choosing the right furniture is the need to consider all of the elements of what makes a piece function best for you.

One of the most important (and highly functional) pieces of computer furniture you will purchase is a computer enclosure or cabinet. Computer enclosures perform a variety of important functions, and one of the most important of these is cooling. Its a simple fact– computers dont function in excessive heat any better than humans do. The faster and more powerful computers get, the more heat they give off. Without the proper cooling accessories and technologies, the CPU of a powerful computer is fried after only a few minutes (or even seconds) of use.

To assure that your computer or computers are protected and will not overheat, its a good idea to think about a standard 19″ Rackmount computer enclosure/cabinet. These types of computer enclosures come in a variety of sizes and are entirely customizable, depending on your storage, power, and cooling needs. They can be stored under a desk, mounted on a wall, or left free-standing. This type of computer furniture can be used to house all computer and electronic equipment (dual enclosures), or only your data and communication equipment.

No matter what size or style of computer enclosure you choose, its important to make the cooling options applied to your enclosure a high priority. There is a wide variety of cooling options to consider, including individual fans, fan panels, filters, thermostats, and temperature gauges.

Individual Fans and Fan Panels/trays

Individual computer enclosure fans generally come in two sizes: 4.5 inch and 10 inch. Fan panels are generally made up of combinations of 4.5 inch fans. These panels come with anywhere from two to four (or more) cooling fans. Some cooling fan trays come fully accessorized, with grilles, temperature gauges, and fan failure warning systems. Most cooling fans are designed for extra quiet operation.

Filters, Thermostats, and Temperature Gauges

Cooling fan filters are designed to keep your equipment clean and free of dust. They are used in conjunction with cooling fans or cooling fan panels. Computer enclosure temperature gauges and thermostats help you to set the ideal temperature for your computer enclosure, ensuring the safety and function of your computer equipment.

All the elements of a computer room or office are important. From chairs to desks to computer enclosures, every piece of computer furniture you choose should be highly functional and appropriate for your equipment. When choosing a computer enclosure, its key to consider all of a computer enclosures intended functions and choose the best options for your equipment.
